SMART MANURE - treatment plant
SMART MAnure NUtrient REcycling (SMART MANURE)
In manure dense regions an excess of nitrogen (NH4-N) is transported over long distances or treated biologically to N2 gas. Specifically in the Flemish region (Belgium) 9.2 milion kg N is biologically treated while yearly 72 milion kg N is import as a fertilizer (urea or ammoniumnitrate).
Detricon provides a technology for nitrogen (N) recovery from manure using an energy efficient stripping and scrubbing technology. This technology creates a sustainable ammonium cycle (see figure below) and produces a technical pure ammoniumnitrate (180 kg N /ton).
OPTION 1: Effluent with a low N en P concentration
The Detricon treatment plant produces an effluent with the following characteristics:
- Total nitrogen < 0,6 kg/ton
- Total P < 0,15 kg/ton
And gives the owner a profit with the production of biobased ammoniumnitrate, reducing the electrical costs up till zero.
Implementation:
- New manure or digestate (\ref digestate treatment) treatment plants
- Existing biological treatment plants, as a pre-treatment step. Lowering the N concentration till 1-2 kg/ton.
- Piggery with > 4000 tons manure/year

OPTION 2: Dischargeabel water
The Detricon treatment plant can be upgraded with a constructed wetland (www.rietland.com) producing dischargeable water with the following characteristics:
- Total nitrogen < 15 g/ton
- Total P < 2 g/ton
- COD < 125 g/ton
Advantages:
- Profit with the production of biobased ammoniumnitrate, reducing the electrical costs up till zero.
- No transportation of the effluent to the land. Extra cost for this extra treatment step is lower than 4,5 euro/ton effluent.
Implementation:
- New manure or digestate (\ref digestate treatment) treatment plants
- Existing biological treatment plants, as a pre-treatment step. Lowering the N concentration till 1-2 kg/ton.
- Piggery with > 4000 tons manure/year
